(Denounced by its author)

Here is a portion of the opening paragraph of the book.

"When this evil little book first came into my hands I thought it was some sick joke, and it might very well be just that. A joke. I hope so. But a book with the title THE GOURMET POISONER'S HANDBOOK and that avers that it is filled with recipes for sauces laced with poison requires examination. Some of the sauces are poisonous it says, not all of them and no way to tell which were the deadly ones and which the simply original recipes. It came to me anonymously with a Cambridge, England postmark, no return address, accompanied by some hand written notations that I have attempted to decipher. I then checked out what actual facts I could glean about the specifics of the origination of the book that after all took place in the late 1890's. Where is Sherlock Holmes when you need him?"

"It's actually not my book," Lesberg claimed. " I'm not sure if it's a service or a disservice to publish it but a cookbook is a cookbook and I believe in free choice. Also, on the face of it it seems harmless, but these recipes have not been tested in my kitchen and won't be. A home cook should be able to examine the ingredients and tell if there's anything potentially harmful, or lethal, and then adjust accordingly. On the face of it, this is a collection of very basic and useful recipes; sauces for meat, fish, desserts, etc. and seem innocent enough. But lurking in the shadows behind each recipe is the potential for some 'creative cooking' at its murkiest. It's not for me to say."

"Please note", the author says, " that I have written an 'explanation' for the book but that the manuscript has a full introduction by the original authors and I suggest both be read thoroughly before turning to the recipes."

There is a moratorium on selling the book until March 1, 2005, but the announcement of the title has attracted some interesting reactions.

A prisoner at the Federal Detention Center in Atlanta was heard to mutter, "Where were you when I needed you?"

A French movie producer has offered to option the title for a film. He hasn't seen the book. A member of the Thanatopsis Society has written to order 100 copies when the book comes out.

The Master Chefs Institute of which the author was once the director, on behalf of its members has denounced the book, but of course haven't read it.

Two 'self help 'and one 'how to' magazine publishers have sent letters offering to buy excerpt rights.

A letter has arrived from an anonymous source but suspicious enough to have been turned over to the police.

A book club has sent a letter asserting that they would NOT be interested even though they hadn't been asked. They too have not yet seen a copy.
