Each newsletter will <br>give you a heads up on special sales or new items in the store, plus a<br>recipe or two I think you?ll want to make. And as always, if you try these<br>recipes, I would appreciate hearing back from you about how it turned out.<br><br>Cookbooks Plus is coming up on our 18-month anniversary. We?ve had the<br>pleasure of meeting so many warm, wonderful people, and we enjoy seeing<br>each of you every time you come in. Many of you bring great stories of<br>meals you?ve prepared for the special folks in your lives; some bring<br>questions, which we do our best trying to answer.<br><br>Barbara and I get a kick out of those of you who scan our shelves and<br>point out which books you have at home, and we remind you that you should<br>be looking for books you don?t have.<br><br>A lot of you come in looking to replace a book you loaned someone and<br>never got back or a special gift for someone you know. But no matter what<br>brought you in the first time, just know that we?re here for you when you<br>need us.<br><br>We?re still looking to move the store to a larger location so that we can<br>put in a kitchen to have cooking classes. We think we found a place, but<br>we?re not making any announcements until we sign a lease. You?ll find a wide variety of books on food &<br>cooking, including cookie cookbooks, as well as books on holiday &<br>decorating crafts. Mention you saw this newsletter and we?ll give you an<br>extra 10% off anything in the holiday section.<br><br>****************************************************<br><br>Special Sale Books<br><br>We have several cartons of books priced to move! There is a box of<br>water-damaged books near the front door marked 80% off! These are still<br>very usable, just not in the condition we usually like to sell them.<br><br>We?ve also put all of our home decorating books on sale to make room for<br>more cookbooks. We have two cartons of these, all 50% off our regular low<br>prices! No exchanges.<br><br>****************************************************<br><br>Thanksgiving Recipes<br><br>Three Corn Casserole<br>? 1/2 cup butter, softened<br>? 1 cup dairy sour cream<br>? 1 egg<br>? 1 can (16 oz) whole kernel corn, drained<br>? 1 can (16 oz) cream style corn, undrained<br>? 1 package (9 oz) corn muffin mix<br>? 1 cup grated Cheddar cheese<br>In large bowl, mix together butter, sour cream and egg.<br>Stir in cans of corn and corn muffin mix.<br>Spoon mixture into buttered 2-quart casserole dish.<br>Bake in preheated 375-degree oven, 45 minutes.<br>Add cheese; stir well.<br>Cook additional 15 minutes, or until dish is slightly puffed.<br>Note: I like to use the Marie Callender?s cornbread mix in the canister<br>and double everything else. Add a drained can of diced green chilies for a<br>Southwestern flavor.<br><br><br>Orange Praline Yams<br>This recipe makes THE BEST yam casserole we've ever eaten. When I<br>announced that I'd misplaced the recipe, my family stopped talking to me.<br>Fortunately, I'd shared it with enough people that I could recover it.<br>? Two 2-lb 8oz cans of yams, drained, or 4 lbs. cooked, peeled fresh<br>? 2/3 cup orange juice<br>? 1 T grated orange rind<br>? 5 T. brandy or rum<br>? 2 t. salt<br>? freshly ground pepper to taste<br>? 1 t. ground ginger<br>? 4 T. butter, melted<br>? 1/3 c. light or golden brown sugar, packed<br>? 3 egg yolks<br>1. Beat yams till smooth. Add rest of ingredients and beat till smooth.<br>2. Place in greased casserole and smooth top.<br>Praline topping:<br>? 2/3 cup light or golden brown sugar<br>? 1 stick butter, melted<br>? 1 c. chopped pecans<br>? 1 t. cinnamon<br>1. Mix and spread evenly over top of casserole.<br>2. Bake 350F for 45-50 min. till golden brown and bubbly.<br>Notes: Use a 12" shallow quiche dish. The night before, make sweet potato<br>part. Recipe may be doubled or tripled, but do not make in a deeper dish<br>or the ratio between potatoes and topping will be off.<br>A single recipe makes 8 to 12 servings, depending on the amount of other<br>foods being served.<br><br><br>Abigail Van Buren's Pecan Pie<br><font color="#800000">>From the world-famous advice columnist, Abigail Van Buren</font><br>? 1 9-inch unbaked pie crust<br>? 1 cup light corn syrup<br>? 1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar<br>? 3 eggs, slightly beaten<br>? 1/3 cup butter, melted<br>? 1/2 t. salt<br>? 1 t. vanilla<br>? 1 heaping cup pecan halves<br><br>Heat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine corn syrup, sugar,<br>eggs, butter, salt and vanilla; mix well. Pour filling into unbaked pie<br>crust; sprinkle with pecan halves. Bake for 45 to 50 mins or until center<br>is set. (Toothpick inserted in center will come out clean when pie is<br>done.) If crust or pie appears to be getting brown, cover with foil for<br>the remaining baking time. Remove from oven and cool.<br>You can top it with a bit of whipped cream, but even plain, nothing tops<br>this!<br><br>****************************************************<br><br>Food Question!
